Production Log #6 - Gonawindua - Some also call it Sierra Nevada de Colombia
"The gas prices have gone up" Says our driver as we're bargaining our way out of the noisy city of santa marta. Arriving In Colombia after COP28 Felt comedic, as we witnessed in only one afternoon, what worldleaders try to relativize since decades. The effects of fossil fuel and mineral extraction are desastrous and we need new technology. When we were in paris Mamo Luciano said "you built the technology that got us into this, and you will equally be able to build technology that gets us out of this". We rarely see a Kogi Mamo speaking with heavy judgement, entitlement, or forbidding us to use planes and phones. They rather point out all the consequences of our actions, giving us a whole interconnected picture of the current state of affairs. We picked up Holden from the airport and after our arrival in the hotel It didn't take long until every one of the team jumped to their devices, making the last phone-calls and writing the last mails before having no internet, no electricity and no seasoned food for the next 12 days. Although @lucasbuchholz sneaked in a stash of spices. If you know him, you know it wasn't a negotiable subject. We're about to enter Gonawindua - or as some call it, the sierra nevada, the highlands of colombia, which the Kogi refer to as "the heart of the world". It took me a while to understand that they are not using that metaphor in a cultural sense, but in an actual biological one, with the sierra nevada being the highest coastal mountain range in the tropics, playing a colossal role in all surrounding ecosystems. As Alan Ereira said, Gonawindua is not the simple belief in nature as an amorphous divinity like the bolivian pachamama. This is analytic - in a sense medical knowledge - of what we think of as a mountain. Equipped with not only our film gear but also the knowledge about gonawindua, we are aware of the great privilege, to enter such a large organism. Wish us luck, stay tuned & happy new year!
